Ch.7 The footsteps close behind

Yang Jian’s legs gave out under him when he could finally relax, he almost dropped onto the ground, gasping for air. Only then did he feel the cold sweat that had collected on his forehead flow down his cheeks, dripping.

He almost just died right then.

"I can't stay here, I’ve got to go, I've got to leave this place as soon as possible..."

Even though he had just escaped the clutches of a ghost, he didn't even have time to recollect on what had just happened.

He hurriedly pulled out his phone, turned on its phone light, and stood up.

A ghost that he knows nothing about is wandering in the darkness of this place. The longer he stays here, the faster he will die.

He walked forwards in the dark.

Yang Jian was trembling slightly, he didn’t know whether it was caused by the excessive tension or inexplicable fear he was feeling.

It didn’t take very long before he saw a scared face as the darkness was dissipated by his light, it was Duan Peng and Zheng Fei, who were standing in front of a mottled and mouldy wall, beating on it frantically.

"Who is it?” Zheng Fei's voice trembled, and he turned around in horror.

There was a dim light.

Yang Jian, holding his mobile phone, said coldly, : "It's me, Yang Jian."

"Y-Yang Jian! You're not dead?" Zheng Fei’s frightened expression showed some signs of shock.

"Do you want me to die as much as Fang Jing?" Yang Jian said.

Duan Peng was a bit agitated, and pounced onto Yang Jiang with a nervous and scared look, he grabbed him and shouted: "Why the hell did you drag me in, why! I had no grievances with you, why did you do this!"

Yang Jian punched him in the face and shouted back: "I had no grievances with you either, didn’t you try to kill me too? You know what you did and now you’re blaming it on me, I said before, if I’m going to die, you’re going to come down with me. The only thing I still regret is not dragging Fang Jing into this. I should really let him experience the feeling of being caught by a ghost like I did just now."

Though Duan Peng was punched onto the ground, but this wasn’t the time for him to be reacting to pain, he only muttered in a sobbing tone, "I-I didn’t want to die, I only wanted to live, it was Fang Jing who told me to do it... plus if I didn't, then everyone would have died when it come out, it was better just you than everyone ending up dead."

"So I should be the one who was sacrificed? This is laughable, why didn’t you sacrifice yourself if you cared so much about everyone? You forced others to be sacrificed for your own sake."

"And did you think that you could have walked out just like that if you sacrificed me? Don't forget that there’s another ghost outside, and don't be naive. Fang Jing wanted to kill me from the start. He must know something, otherwise he wouldn’t have been gunning for me like this. I’ll have my revenge one day, if I can walk out of here alive that is..."

But before he finished his sentence, Duan Peng suddenly started to shake, with a look of horror on his face, he looked behind his back.

Nothing can be seen in the thick darkness that surrounded them, but he could feel a cold hand grabbing his wrist.

And the cold palm was exerting an incredible amount of force.

Duan Peng's body was dragged back wildly.

"Help me! Help me! Help me Yang Jian..." Duan Peng screamed in horror.

Yang Jian's heart shuddered, the pale hand locking onto Duan Peng's wrist inadvertently catching his attention.

His heart skipped a beat... There is no doubt that the ghost from before has returned.

Yang Jiang almost subconsciously brought out his phone and prepared to open the audio file, hoping to redo what he did before to scare off the ghost.

But he stopped right as he moved his hand.

Was Duan Peng really someone worthy of saving?

No.

He’s not.

Fang Jing, Duan Peng, Zheng Fei and others are the ones who forced me into this situation in the first place.

And now that they are in danger, I should be the one to save them? They didn’t even try to help me when I was attacked just now, the only thing they did to try and escape this place by themselves, not to mention even if I did want to save him, how would I do it? The audio file on my phone can only scare the ghost away, it can’t hurt it at all. I'm just a paper tiger.

You want to live? Then do I not also want to live?

Fang Jing was right. I’m too naive. I already heard that Fang Jing wanted to kill me in the classroom, and I was still unprepared.

I won’t let this happen ever again.

Putting down the phone in his hand, Yang Jian took a step back, indifferently looking at the figure of Duan Peng constantly being hauled into the darkness, he remained cold no matter how much he screamed or called for help.

In the end, he saw Duan Peng's figure disappear into the darkness with fear in his eyes, at the same time the pale hand also disappeared.

The instant darkness engulfed Duan Peng, even his cries for help vanished.

Everything else quickly returned to serenity, the only sound you could hear were water drops splattering into the sink echoing out.

Yang Jian turned his head and exhaled deeply. He tried his best to stabilize the tension in his body and overcome the fear in his heart, he then held up his phone as if nothing had happened and started looking for a way out.

This ghost is still wandering here, so if he continues staying here, there was no guarantee that the ghost would not choose to attack him again.

Fang Jing has said that the people can temporarily delay a ghost for a short while.

The reason he was knocked into the toilet was because Fang Jing wanted to use his life to delay that ghost.

In that case, since Duan Peng was captured by a ghost, there must be a certain amount of time before the ghost appears again.

If this analysis is correct, he would be safe before the ghost attacks again.

He could only pray that he is right.

Thinking up till this point, Yang Jian immediately started finding the way out of here.

"Yang Jian, where are you going? Take, take me with you."

Zheng Fei quickly chased after Yang Jian when he saw him leaving.

Yang Jian ignored him, and refused coldly: "Figure the way out yourself, don't follow me, do you still expect me to lead you out of here? You do know that I only ended up here because of you."

After speaking, he quickened his footsteps and quickly melded into the darkness.

The only reason for not exacting his revenge on the spot, was because he had considered the fact that they were once classmates. Plus the ghost will definitely come after him after killing Duan Peng, I’ll let him wait here until then, this will buy me some time.

If the ghost attacks again, Zheng Fei will definitely be the prioritized target.

Zheng Fei tried following suit, but Yang Jian was no longer anywhere to be found, there was only boundless darkness left.

"Y-Yang Jian, where are you? Come out! I didn't want to kill you, I’m sorry, I’ll apologize..."

He was crying, his hands groping about in the darkness, there was no feedback.

Zheng Fei continued walking around.

But he soon discovered that he was lost...

Now that he couldn't find Yang Jian, he wanted to turn back and return to the wall where he had been before, but he couldn't find the wall behind him anymore.

It seems that he was no longer in the familiar toilet, but instead a dark and endless space.

Fear gradually rose up to his heart, drowning out what little courage he had left.

Just then, he heard a series of dull sounding footsteps approaching from behind.

The sound of footsteps were moving closer, constantly walking towards where he was standing...

"D-Duan Peng, is it you?" Zheng Fei asked cautiously with a trembling voice.

He didn’t even get to finish what he said.

When a pale palm stretched out from the darkness and grabbed his neck from behind.

It was cold, stiff, unlike the hand of a living person.

"Ah~!" He let out a hysterical scream .

But that scream wasn’t heard by anyone, Yang Jian was facing another problem.

I’ve gotten lost in this darkness again.

"This is definitely not a toilet..." he thought to himself.

There was no end to the darkness in front of him, the distance he walked for had already far exceeded the length of a toilet.

Yang Jian looked at the time on his phone, a full twenty minutes had passed.

This is simply unreasonable for someone to be unable to walk out of a toilet in twenty minutes, worse even was he hasn’t even touched a wall or even a toilet seat.

The only explanation was that he had wandered into some unknown place.

"Damn it, what the hell is an apparitional domain? Zhou Zheng didn’t even mention anything about it when he was giving the lecture." Yang Jian was feeling very anxious.

There wasn’t enough information, he couldn't come to any conclusions at all, let alone find some way to deal with this ghost’s domain.

"Pit-a-pat, pit-a-pat."

The sound of water dripping from the tap rang out.

"Wait, the sound of water dripping... it disappeared for a while before, why did it suddenly appear again."

Yang Jian's expression shifted, he walked towards the direction of the sound of water dripping without an ounce of hesitation.

If there is the sound of a dripping tap, it means that the toilet is nearby. And if he could get back to the toilet he could find the door and leave this place.

Shit, if he had just paid attention to this earlier.

With a target in mind, he regained a bit of confidence. Yang Jian quickened his pace .

But soon, he heard the low battery warning from his phone, this surprised him. He hesitated for a moment, but he gritted his teeth and turned his light off.

He fears the ghost that was wandering here more than the darkness surrounding him.

This bit of power must be reserved for the most critical of times.

He moves forwards in the dark, cautiously.

Within the darkness was only the sound of dripping water, and nothing else.

It was scary how quiet his surroundings were, Yang Jian could even hear his own breathing clearly.

But it wasn’t long after he turned off his light.

Suddenly.

"Click, clack~!"

A series of footsteps rang from behind Yang Jian, heavy and crisp.

The sound of footsteps approached from far, and gradually approached him.

In an instant, Yang Jian's figure stiffened, his whole body tense, he turned on the light on his mobile phone and looked back with it in hand.

The light illuminated only about one meter forwards, there is nothing behind him, only thick inky darkness.

But the footsteps were getting even closer.

"It is absolutely impossible for that to be Zheng Fei or Duan Peng..." Yang Jian's expression tightened

It is impossible for a person to follow him so accurately in the dark.

And if this isn't Zheng Fei and Duan Peng, then in all likelihood it's the ghost that wanders these toilets.

"I can’t stay here"

Feeling the footsteps approaching him, Yang Jian's heart sank, he hurriedly sped up.
